ESL Frequently Asked Questions
What does ESL mean?
ESL stands for English as a Second Language
Can I take your classes if I don't know any English at all?
Yes, our ESL program is for adults who would like to learn or improve their English. Our classes are offered at three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. For those students that score above advanced level, we will offer ABE (Adult Basic Education) classes for you to continue to develop your reading and writing skills.
Does it cost anything to take ESL classes?
No, our ESL classes are free for New Britain residents.
If you do not live in New Britain, search in Google "ESL" and the name of your town, and you will be provided with the Adult Education center closest to your area of residence.
How do you know in what class to place me?
We will administer a reading and a listening assessment to determine the best placement for you. In addition to these assessments being part of the entry criteria and required by the State Department of Education in Connecticut, they will provide teachers your areas of strength and areas that may need extra help.
How long am I going to be taking classes?
There is no simple answer to this question. The answer depends on your English language background and your personal goals.
